Did You Ever See Such a Sight: See How They Run Review

If you’re a fan of Agatha Christie mysteries, then this comedy/murder mystery is the movie for you. The cast and crew of The Mousetrap (based on her radio play Three Blind Mice, which she created for Queen Mary’s 80th birthday), gather to celebrate the show’s hundredth performance when someone is murdered at the party. Inspector Stoppard and rookie Constable Stalker are on the case, questioning the cast, crew, and others to uncover the murderer.

Saoirse Ronan, who plays the eager, inexperienced constable, proves to be the highlight of the movie. She’s earnest and well-meaning, but her inexperience means she is constantly jumping to conclusions and making assumptions. One of her more endearing (and therefore annoying) habits is writing down every little thing said or seen, because she doesn’t know how to identify important details. This habit proves to be useful more than once over the course of the investigation.

One thing you do not often get in an Agatha Christie story is Agatha Christie herself, but in See How They Run, the reclusive writer herself makes an appearance, played by Shirley Henderson (best known as Moaning Myrtle in Harry Potter). I won’t say more so as not to spoil the hilarious encounter, but needless to say you should remain on your guard when around someone who makes their living by coming up with stories about how people are murdered.

Not a must-see movie, you’ll likely find yourself pleasantly surprised like I did. Even if you aren’t familiar with The Mousetrap and Agatha Christie in general, you can still enjoy this comedic murder-mystery.
