New and Returning Shows to Get Excited for September 2022
There’s an array of new and returning series coming to streaming this month. Here are the ones we’re particularly excited for:
Lord of the Rings (September 1, Prime Video) – Season 1 Premiere
Set thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, this is one of Amazon’s biggest pushes into event TV, so expect high quality (it expected to be the most expensive television show ever made). The series covers some of the major events of Middle Earth that we have only heard about until now, including the creating of the rings of power, the rise of the evil wizard Sauron, the last alliance between Elves and Man, and more.
Pantheon (September 1, AMC+) – Season 1 Premiere
This animated series follows bullied teen Maddie who starts receiving messages from someone claiming to be her deceased father. As she tries to uncover the truth, she stumbles upon a much larger conspiracy surrounding an evil corporation, artificial intelligence, and humanity’s search for eternal life. This marks AMC’s first traditionally animated series and features some well known voices, including Daniel Dae Kim (Lost, Hawaii Five-O) , Katie Chang (The Bling Ring), Paul Dano (Escape at Dannemora), Rosemarie DeWitt (Little Fires Everywhere), Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight), Taylor Schilling (Orange Is The New Black), Ron Livingston (A Million Little Things), Chris Diamantopoulos (Silicon Valley), Raza Jaffrey (Homeland), and William Hurt (Black Widow, Goliath).
Fakes (September 2, Netflix) – Season 1 Premiere
Lifelong best friends Zoe and Rebecca find themselves embroiled in a get rich scheme – selling fake IDs – that soon puts their friendship and their lives at risk as things quickly spiral out of control. Told from each friends’ point of view, the series takes the audience on a wild ride, trying to sort out what really happened.
Wedding Season (September 8, Hulu) – Season 1 Premiere
An action-packed series about Katie (Rosa Salazar), who despite having a fiancé, begins to have an affair with Stefan (Gavin Drea). Despite their illicit relationship, she gets married to her fiancé a few months later, only for her now-husband and in-laws to be poisoned at the wedding reception. The police think Gavin did it, Gavin thinks Katie did it. The two try to prove their respective innocence.
The Imperfects (September 8, Netflix) – Season 1 Premiere
Twenty-somethings Abbi, Tilda, and Juan are experimented on without the consent – to disastrous effect. The experimental gene therapy turns them into monsters with terrifying abilities. The three band together to track down the scientists who experimented on them and force him to cure them.
Cobra Kai (September 9, Netflix) – Season 5 Premiere
Somehow there is still more to say about the redemption story of Johnny Lawrence from Karate Kid and I’m here for it. Cobra Kai has been one wild, illogical ride about how karate can both help build you up but also turn you into a bully if you let it go to your head. (Uncle Ben said it best: “With great power comes great responsibility.”) No one seems to know how to control these unruly teens, least of all their senseis, leading to one disaster after another. The only thing we know for sure is that we are in for another wild ride.
American Gigolo (September 11, Showtime) – Season 1 Premiere
Male escort Jon Bernthal (Ford v Ferrari, The Walking Dead) was framed for a murder he didn’t commit. After 18 years in prison, he is finally released and seeks to reestablish himself in the sex industry while also working to solve the mystery of who set him up for murder in the first place. The series is an adaptation of the 1980 movie.
The Handmaid’s Tale (September 14, Hulu) – Season 5 Premiere
The struggles within the dystopian Gilead continues as everyone on both sides faces the consequences and results of June killing Commander Waterford of last season.
Heartbreak High (September 14, Netflix) – Season 1 Premiere
A reboot of the long-running Australian series, Heartbreak High follows Amerie who becomes a pariah at school after her map of school hookups is found, exposing many relationships and even outing some people. Together with her new friends, outsiders Quinn and Darren, Amerie seeks to repair her relationship and navigate the drama of high school.
Vampire Academy (September 15, Peacock) – Season 1 Premiere
Dhampir (half-vampire, half human) Rose Hathaway has been training her whole life to become a Guardian for her best friend Vasilissa “Lissa” Dragomir, who is the last surviving member of the royal Moroi (vampire) family, the Dragomirs. Based on the book series by Richelle Mead, there’s a lot of material to draw from, though how closely the series draws from its source material remains to be seen. With Julie Plec as one of the showrunners, this series has a lot of promise.
Fate: The Winx Saga (September 16, Netflix) – Season 2 Premiere
This decidedly darker take on the animated series is returning for its second season! The series follows teenage fairies as they work to master their elemental magic. A new headmistress at the school will lead the students to form their own Rebel Alliance.
Best in Dough (September 19, Hulu) – Season 1 Premiere
Hosted by Wells Adam with head judge, Chef Daniele Uditi of Pizzana, the newest cooking competition, which delves into the world of pizza.
Reboot (September 20, Hulu) – Season 1 Premiere
An all-star cast that includes Keegan-Michael Key, Judy Greer, Rachel Bloom, and other fan favorites, is about a network rebooting a fictitious TV series, forcing its dysfunctional cast back together after many years. The show will focus on the behind-the-scenes drama at the TV studio, including the out of touch series creator and the progressive young writer.
Andor (September 21, Disney+) – Season 1 Premiere
The newer Star Wars movies have had their share of struggles, but Rogue One stands out as general well-received and well-loved. Which is great news for the newest Star Wars TV series (which have been better received than the movies in general anyway). Andor takes an even deeper look into the rebellion leading up to the first Star Wars movie (Episode IV – A New Hope), set before Rogue One. The series follows the thief Cassian Andor and others during the formation of the Rebel Alliance. Planned to run for two seasons, the series will cover the five years prior to the events of Rogue One.
Reasonable Doubt (September 27, Hulu) – Season 1 Premiere
Jax Stewart (played by Emayatzy Corinealdi) is a brilliant, ethically questionable lawyer who you want on your defense when you’ve been accused of a crime. The series is executive produced by Kerry Washington.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers (September 28, Disney+) – Season 2 Premiere
The team has finally won back the name “The Ducks” and now they are headed to a summer training camp to focus on their skills, sans Gordon Bombay (due to Emilio Estevez leaving the series, though whether due to creative differences or COVID protocols remains up for speculation). The team will instead contend with former NHL-player turned coach, Colin Cole.
