It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye: 7 Shows Come to an End on NBC

Though it does not have quite as many cancellations as The CW, NBC still has a sizable number of shows being canceled or ending:

Ellen’s Game of Games – After four seasons, Ellen’s Game of Games has officially been canceled. Hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, the show brings contestants together to compete in a series of outrageous competitions to win a cash price. DeGeneres seems to have lost her shine after allegations that she fostered and enabled a toxic work environment on her now-canceled talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, surfaced in 2020. It is has not been confirmed whether or not these allegations have played into the cancellation of either show.

The EndgameThe Endgame was just getting starting in this unique heist show that focused less on the the heists and more on stopping them and uncovering their motivation. International arms dealer and criminal mastermind Elena Federova (Morena Baccarin) is arrested, yet reveals she still holds all the cards – while in custody, she orchestrates seven simultaneous bank heists across New York City. Everything is not what it seems and these bank heists are no simple thing. As FBI Agent Val Turner (Ryan Michelle Bathé) attempts to decipher Federova’s cryptic taunts and clues, she uncovers a conspiracy that could send the country reeling. The Endgame was canceled after one season.

Kenan – Canceled after two seasons, Kenan follows widower Kenan (played by Kenan Thompson), a local Atlanta TV personality and trying to balance his career as the host of the morning show “Wake Up With Kenan,” a popular morning show, with raising his two daughters.

Mr. Mayor – Navigating city politics turns out to be much more difficult than Neil Bremer (Ted Danson) expected when he becomes the mayor of Los Angeles. Mr. Mayor made it two seasons before being canceled.

Small Fortune – An adaptation of a British TV series of the same name, Small Fortune sees teams of friends and family test their precision, strategy and technique in unique challenges in mini-versions of real world locations real-world locations. This series aired a short first season before its cancellation at the beginning of 2022.

New Amsterdam – NBC announced a shortened fifth and final season to wrap up this medical series, which follows the doctors of at America’s oldest public hospital, New Amsterdam Hospital. When idealistic and optimistic Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) becomes the medical director, he makes sweeping, disruptive changes, always with the best of intentions but not always with the best results.

This Is Us – The ending of This Is Us has been in the works since 2019 when when NBC announced it would be renewed for three seasons before ending. Knowing the endpoint of this family-focused drama should hopefully allow for a well-crafted impactful finale, something many series struggle to provide. The series tells the story of the Pearson family, following parents Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and their three children, Kevin *Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz), and Randall (Sterling K. Brown). The series jumps between past, present, and future, sharing the significant moments throughout their lives.

Biggest Loss: The Endgame. The more obvious choice for a big loss would be the tearjerker This Is Us, but we have had six seasons and the Pearsons’ story has been beautifully told. The Endgame, on the other hand, was just beginning. Morena Baccarin is as entrancing as ever. Ukranian arms dealer is a far cry from her early role as high society courtesan Inarra Serra in the short-lived but much-loved Firefly, but she plays it well. Has it ever been so easy to root for a criminal mastermind? It is a shame we will never get to see the rest of her plan come to fruition, along with how she deals with the rival they introduced at the very end of the season.
