It’s Over: Fox Cancels 4 Shows
With the fewest shows canceled of any broadcast network, Fox has canceled just four shows so far:
The Big Leap – This scripted series follows a group of ordinary people participate in a reality dance show that will culminate in a live performance of Swan Lake. Familiar faces among the cast are Scott Foley playing the show’s producer Nick Blackburn, Teri Polo as mother of two Julia Perkins, and Piper Perabo as cancer survivor and former employee in cutthroat corporate America Piper Clarke. The show had a lot of heart and did a good job of exploring the struggle between making “good TV” and being kind to the people involved. It was canceled after its first season.
Our Kind of People – Single mother Angela Vaughn (Yaya DaCosta), moves to Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard with her daughter, determined to reclaim her family’s name and create a haircare line dedicated to Black women. But when she uncovers a secret of her mother’s, her life and the neighborhood will never be the same. The series, which ran for one season, was inspired by the book Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class by Lawrence Otis Graham.
Ordinary Joe – This Sliding Doors-esque show follows Joe Kimbreau (James Wolk) through different potential paths his life might have taken based on a single decision after college graduation. Each choice leads him to a different life – as a nurse, police officer, or rock star – with many surprising similarities. Ordinary Joe was yet another single-season series for Fox.
Pivoting – Eliza Coupe, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Maggie Q play Amy, Jodie, and Sarah, three friends who, reeling from the death of a close friend, decide to re-examine their lives and make big changes. Amy realizes that she is an absentee mother and decides to be more present with her children. Jodie finds her marriage unfulfilling and seeks joy elsewhere. Sarah quits her stressful job as a surgeon for the low-pressure job as a grocery store worker.
The Biggest Loss: Pivoting. This might have been the best new comedy in a long while. While Maggie Q and Ginnifer Goodwin are not typically cast in comedic roles, they were more than up for the task. Together with Coupe, they formed a lovable, dysfunctional trio that you rooted for even as they made questionable choices because they were at least trying. The series could also give many others a lesson on how to make a deceased or departed character still feel like an important, remembered part of everything. Too often when a character dies or leaves, they are rarely, if ever, mentioned again and it often feels like everyone has forgotten them, no matter how close they were to the people remaining.
