Six Powerhouse Leads Will Give You ‘Queenspiration’: Six: The Musical Review
Six: The Musical has been on my must-see list since a friend of mine started singing the luscious during lunch one Saturday. The music was catchy and fun, even as I had little idea what it was about. Six tells the story of Henry VIII’s six wives, if they had started a pop group of sorts. Confused? I was. I could not imagine what that could possibly mean in practice (how does someone even think up an idea like that?) but now that I’ve seen the show I can attest that it’s about an accurate description as you can get.
The six leads are true powerhouses and I was blown away by their range and power. They were each given their moment to shine and shine they did. The variety of body types and races was also refreshing, but not distracting. The music itself was broad and diverse, taking “queenspiration” from such big names as Beyoncé, Arianna Grande, Lily Allen, Nicki Minaj, Adele, Alicia Keys, and more. The music is fun, and surprisingly upbeat considering it discussed topics like beheadings and sexual assault, and I will likely be playing them on repeat in the coming weeks.
I thoroughly enjoyed this show, but if you are anti-girl power, history, or fun, this musical is not for you.
