Pretty Smart Becomes Eighth Show Canceled by Netflix in 2022
The cancellation of Emily Osment’s Pretty Smart becomes yet another series canceled in 2022 for the streaming service. Pretty Smart, which starred Osment as a snobby intellectual (she graduated from Harvard and is writing a book!) who is stuck moving in with her less intelligent, care-free sister after her boyfriend dumps her. The show, which would have felt more at home on Freeform when it was still known as ABC Family, lasted only one season.
Other canceled Netflix shows in 2022 include:
- Cooking with Paris (1 season) – A cooking show following socialite Paris Hilton and guest stars Kim Kardashian, Saweetie, Nikki Glaser, and more.
- Archive 81 (1 season) – When an archivist takes a job restoring damaged videotapes, he finds he has a curious connection to the missing director and a mysterious cult that they were documenting.
- On the Verge (1 season) – Four women — a chef, a single mom, an heiress and a job seeker — dig into love and work, with a generous side of midlife crises, in pre-pandemic LA.
- Gentefied (2 seasons) – In Los Angeles, three Mexican-American cousins attempt to save the family-owned taco shop as their neighborhood is being gentrified.
- Another Life (2 seasons) – Astronaut Niko Breckinridge leads a crew on a mission to explore the origins of an alien artifact that crash lands on Earth. The crew faces unimaginable dangers on what may end up being a one-way mission.
- The Babysitters Club (2 seasons) – Based on the book series by the same name, five middle graders start their own babysitting service.
- Raising Dion (2 seasons) – A widowed mother discovers her son has superpowers and attempts to raise him responsibly, discover the origins of his powers, and keep those powers a secret.
These cancellations come amid announced that Netflix has lost 200,000 subscribers since the start of 2022 (along with 700,000 viewers lost from pulling out of Russia due to the war in Ukraine) and expects to lose 2 million customers before June 2022. There have also been a number of in-house projects that have been canceled prior to their development, such as adaptations of Ronald Dahl’s Twits, Jeff Smith’s Bone, and Laura Faust’s Toil and Trouble, as well as the Meghan Markle’s Pearl and Will Smith-led Bright 2 (though the latter may be at least partially related to Smith slapping Chris Rock during the Oscars this year).
